ENSEMBLE JOAN MARCH

The Escola de Montserrat (Montserrat Musical School) has always been valued for its excellence and for its almost uninterrupted continuity over time —from the beginning of the 17th century to the present day. Joan March (1582-1658), its first composer with preserved works, was the direct teacher of Joan Cererols and would be part of the first generation of Baroque composers in Catalonia. Unfortunately, the bulk of his work would disappear with the destruction of the monastery in 1811. Among the few compositions that have been preserved, the remarkable Requiem Mass for eight voices stands out in particular, which Joan March presents as a hinge work, in which the general conception and formal sense are still faithful to the Renaissance principles of balance and clarity despite integrating some elements that distort and darken that origin and take us back to the Baroque ideals.
