CARANZALEM

Bread and roses
Beyond duality. Women and music in the Middle Ages

Date: 05/07/26
Time: 18:00h
Venue: Pesillà de la Ribera · Chapel of Sant Sadurní

Programme

Works by Alfons X el Savi and anonymous authors
Caranzalem presents a programme that includes a medieval Christian, Sephardic and Andalusian repertoire and explores the figure of the medieval woman, who had been both revered in some contexts and feared in others. In Islamic and Jewish cultures, women played a key role: in the Islamic world, female singers were thoroughly trained in vocal and instrumental skills as lute performers; in the Jewish world, although women were more restricted to the home, some Sephardic poetesses sang for life with lullabies as well as wedding or love songs. The programme pays tribute and gives voice to all those anonymous women, whatever the role they were allowed to develop or had to live. They are all part of our roots and of a past that is usually unfairly forgotten.
