Portbou

Portbou

Located on the French border, Portbou hosts international urban heritage and high-quality beaches. The train station, in line with Eiffel’s designs; the church, with icons by Frederic Marès; and the cemetery, with masonic remains, are also worth the visit. Another must is the sculpture called Passatges, by Dani Caravan, a memorial dedicated to philosopher Walter Benjamin, who committed suicide in Portbou on 26th September 1940 on his way to the United States to escape from Gestapo when he heard about his forced repatriation. Portbou is a mix of memory and exile, art and landscape. A symbol of peace and culture.
