St Joan de les Abadesses

Located in the southeast of the region of Ripollès, Sant Joan de les Abadesses has an extraordinary medieval heritage closely linked to the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, which was born in the shelter of this town during the Middle Ages. Besides the monastery, Sant Joan also has buildings and constructions of huge cultural interest such as the Romanesque church of Sant Pol, the Gothic Old Bridge, the Palace Abbey (National Cultural Heritage) or the remains of the medieval wall that surrounded the old town, built from the 13th century. The town also offers a number of options for nature lovers: pedaling along the natural environment of the region, hiking routes and even trips around literary figures such as Joan Maragall (who spent many summers in the village) or the local poet Josep Soler Picola.
