According to J. W. Goethe, “the string quartet is like a conversation between four intelligent people”. The Viennese tradition of string quartet was probably the instrumental frame in which the self-improvement of the figure of a soloist most showed up. However, the composition scheme for four voices on an equal footing belonged to the counterpoint tradition, which started long before, in the 16th century. This programme takes us to a chronological trip from the beginning of these forms to the progressive dissolution of that practice in the 19th century, by way of its passing through Baroque and Late Baroque periods and through the last glorious examples of the classicism period.
