La Seu d'Urgell

La Seu d'Urgell, which has origins in the Late Bronze Age had periods of spectacular growth in medieval times, partly because the cathedral of the city was the centre for economical and spiritual power of the Bishop and canons. The new cathedral, was built in the XII century, and is the only example of Catalan Romanesque in a cathedral. This is the fourth to be erected on the same place. Altogether it makes an architectural ensemble formed by other interesting churches worth visiting, such as the church of St. Miquel (XI century). This is the only one built before the current cathedral that has survived. It is also worth visiting the Diocesan Museum of Urgell that has a permanent collection of liturgical objects from the X to the XVIII century and the Ermengol Space, also a major figure in the history of the Alt Urgell.
