The Milanese violinists of the early 17th century played a key part in the spreading of their instrument and of the baroque aesthetics in whole Europe. However, in 1630, a severe plague epidemic devastated the city and put an end to the course of that generation of musicians. When the first cases of plague broke out in Milan, the city soon became a stage of grief marked by death, food shortage and social restrictions. In this context, the artistic productions intended to give hope to the people as well as to express the anxiety and the fear that was striking in the homes and in the streets. Through this programme, Solnegre presents sacred works of three authors who died from infection in the Milanese catastrophe: Giovanni Battista Fontana, Pablo Cima and Dario Castello.
