Decadent and withdrawn into itself, the ultraconservative Spanish monarchy of the 17th century locked the borders of the country hermetically for fear of the heretic influences coming from northern Europe. Although arts suffered censorship and inquisition quite seriously, paradoxically enough, we can nowadays enjoy the consequences that this meant to music: far from the italianizing currents, the Spanish musicians were forced to create a singular and original language under the strong influence of the popular music and of the forms and styles of the Spanish colonies. Originally from the most humble layers of society and from the most remote regions, they ended up dominating the music of Versailles’s court as well as the writing of great composers such as Bach and Scarlatti, thanks to whom chaconnes, fandangos, folias and canarios became part of History.
