In the Golden Age, at the time Seville would import riches from America, Francisco Guerrero, apart from his sacred music, wrote an extraordinary profane repertoire called Villanescas, that are sensual, direct, poignant or tender works that were widely successful. In the court of the thriving Renaissance Valencia, Mateu Fletxa, from Tarragona, one of the best musicians in Spanish history, develops a musical genre called ensalada: a series of popular songs mixed with a polyphonic plot that tells a moralizing story in a casual way. Cor Francesc Valls takes us to Guerrero’s Seville and Fletxa’s Valencia, the best representatives of a free, lively and powerful Renaissance expressivity.
